The Chelsea Flower Show is among the premier places to learn about trends that impact not only gardening and floral arrangements, but also floral surface designs. Editorial Correspondent Jane Stockel, who attended Chelsea Flower Show 2016 on behalf of The Trend Curve, came away with these trend impressions.

PLANTING STYLE

Natural landscapes, featuring relaxed design made formal gardens look dated. The LG Smart Garden, designed by Hay Joung Hwang, offered a perfect example of this approach.

ACCESS FOR ALL

Garden designs in small, portable segments can be separated and placed in urban spaces. Adding green space and even food sources to cities will become increasingly important as more of the worldwide population shifts to urban living in the next 35 - 50 years.

URBAN GREENHOUSE

Totally seamless, like a glass bathroom shower, this concept is perfect for city dwellers. It also brings a contemporary look with total transparency to garden vignettes that has not existed in the past. Pure Greenhouse hit it out of the ballpark with this new approach.

WELLNESS

Health-giving gardens go beyond edible plants to include pebbles designed to improve foot circulation. While this garden was sponsored by the St. John's Hospice (and designed by Jekka McVicar), The Trend Curve forecasts that as wellness continues into the mainstream, it will be integrated into every area of the home, both indoors and outside.
